Human beings have been fascinated about mystical creatures from as long as I remember being able to read
a book. I was introduced to African Folklore  stories by the names of , "Anansi the spider" and  "Br'er Rabbit and The Tar Baby" whom first picked my fascination about the supernatural world.
From then on i learnt about more about folk tale stories from the Caribbean namely: lajabless( a child who
was born dead and who did not get baptized) who came to take the places of living babies, majinwe( a
human being who sold his soul to the devil and had to shed its skin at night), garje or obeah( black magic )
and the list goes on. This was enough to scare you to death. And the stories that were  told by different individuals was enough to make  you want to splash holy water all over your skin.
All these things made you wonder, if there was really a supernatural world?, Were these creatures real or just legends made up to scare us and make us fear the unknown? or Was it merely stories from an individual with a vivid imagination?
Its like the novel  we read " Coraline" , where she was faced with supernatural creatures who transformed them selves to lure her into their world. We may not know if her adventure was made up or if she really did  endure all the hardships that she did . But we do know that a child of her age could not imagine such creatures in such detail or frighten her self in such a way  for the zeal of an  adventure.
We can say the author himself is fascinated with life beyond  ours like  everyone else.We always wonder if there is world that exists within ours or in the space of time. We try to ponder ideas and theories and develop philosophies to try to understand what he have deemed the supernatural.
Its also  like the film we watched in class "Spirited away" where Chihiro was just flung into  the spirit world  where she had to try to survive and rescue her parents. Little did she know by just walking, through that tunnel that she had crossed the threshold into another world and would meet magical creatures that she never would imagine.
Its like we human beings are just fascinated by what we do not understand  and films and movies such as this draw us in , it  holds our attention and makes want to know more.We all wonder what lurks in the dark when we sleep at night? That creepy feeling we get and our hairs stand on end for no apparent reason what causes this?Is there an entire world behind our closets like  the movie Monster Inc? or Are there really monsters under our bed?  and Blood sucking Vampires? We look for something that will hold our interest because maybe our lives are just to boring and we crave for an adventure.Or is there another reason that we humans are so fascinated about supernatural beings or are we the ones who should fear ourselves.

Coraline -Neil Gaiman
Coraline Jones, is a young vibrant girl who seeks out adventure when she moves into her new house. Like any young child, her need for adventure calls to her, as she explores the new world that she has been thrown into. She has no choice but to go exploring as her parents are busy doing other things and there are no other kids around that  could keep her company, so she seeks on a quest to get to know her neighbors and her immediate surroundings.
In her quest for knowledge, she makes new discoveries and encounters various characters within her journey. She meets  Miss Spink and  Miss Forcible who were once famous actresses, who lives in the flat below them and also the crazy man who lives upstairs who was training a mouse circus whom she thought, he was making up the entire time.
From the beginning, Coraline is portrayed as an orphan,a child seeking the love of others and a place where she felt like she belonged. She wasn't truly an orphan in the physical sense but emotionally she felt like she was abandoned by her family, as they were too wrapped up in their own worlds to take notice of her wants and  needs. So, she turns to a archetype that we all poses, which is one of the seeker.
Boredom is something that Coraline experiences throughout the novel and this is the one thing that drives her to be adventurous  and to search for new things. We see this archetype really strongly when she crosses over to the other world, despite warnings from the old man upstairs, who tells her that “ the mice have a message for you.....The message is this. Don't go through the door.”(pg 41)  and from Miss Spink, who reads the leaf in her tea and warns her that she is in terrible danger and to not wear green.Like the explorer she says she is, she dismisses the warnings and does what she knows best , what she loves to do the most, which is exploring. She  continues to say to herself, that she is an explorer throughout the entire novel and her need for discovery leads her to her world, like that of her own, but very different, in subtle ways.
She discovers a big carved, brown wooden door at the far corner of the drawing room which was shut tight. She questions her mother as to what is behind that door, but her mother says, that there is nothing behind there , that it, leads to know where.Coraline  immediately questions  her mother and says “It has to go somewhere.”(p.6) She is handed a bunch of  keys so that she could see for herself that was nothing behind the door. But little did she know, that by,  opening that door she had let in a creature which would try to win her love and claim her as her own. This creature will first be seen, as the light to her world, but would later turn into  her adversary , the one thing that pushes her and propels all of the qualities  that we lacked seeing in the beginning of the novel.
By her being as stubborn and adventurous as she is ,her crossing  over to the other world brought about her parents being taken  away, by the creature, which lurked in the darkness. She  uses them as bait to capture Coraline and intends to  use them as a leverage for  her  to  become a part of their happy family.
This door becomes a world of its own, a gateway for Coraline to reach her parents  as in that  instant,  she steps through that door nothing is the same any more. She has released a creature that she will soon come to know. One that she has to defeat  and be conniving  in order to come out triumphant and with this we see an archetype in Coraline that wasn't there to begin with , which is that of the warrior archetype.
She has entered uncharted territory and must face an adventure she does not expect. She has to be brave  and says to her self at some point “when you scared but you still do it anyway, thats brave”(pg 57).” I will be brave” No i am brave.”when she stands up against the other mother to save herself her parents and the lost souls in the closet.
Coraline faces diversities that she was not prepared for,she has to face off with her disfigured other father to free herself from being stuck there forever , from the creature that was stuck to the wall in the theatre who shouted back at her “Thief ! Give it back ! Stop ! Thief ! (pg 62)She stands up against them despite all her fears and doubts with little armour but a stone with a hole in it which really was just there to protect her from something which i, nor her self even knew.
She finally snaps back into reality and her  view of the other  world  is not as interesting as it semeed to be , it was a “pale nothing or an enormous, empty white room.It had no tempreture , no smell, no texture, and no taste.” (pg 64) and her life has finally changed as the images in her head isn't the same anymore , she doesn't want that life she always thought she wanted,  so she fights through her fears and insecurities ,her desires, her naivness and comes forward triumphant and anew.   She didn't want to end up like the children that she had discovered behind the mirror , she didn't want to love the other mother , she wanted her life back she wanted her family back and she wanted the other children to be free once again, so she  makes a proposal an exploring game that is , that if she finds each soul and her parents that the other mother must let her go as well as everyone else and if she loses, then she will stay there forever and allow her to sew the black buttons into her eyes allow herself to love her and vice versa.
Although she is  skeptical  of whether or not the other mother would keep her side of the deal, she swears that she would give her right hand.Coraline has to be sly to survive and has  also has to think at the top of her head and be resilient , brave and face challenges that she thought she would lose. And this qualites are all part of the warrior archetype which is one of the strongest archetypes that represents her.
The world she was in now wasnt as interesting as it first turned out to be, now, it was “a pale nothing or an enormous, empty white room.It had no tempreture,no smell,no texture, and no tasste.”She wants again meets the cat who enlightens her once again about the other world who says to her “Spiders’s webs only have to be large enough to catch flies.” which makes refraince to the world that she is in. It basically means that although the world isn't as big as her other world she has been trapped and lured in by the other mother and may not be able to escape her clutches.
She angers the other mother who lashes out strong winds at her to deter her from continuing with her quest as she has discovered the first lost soul. She continues on despite what has happening around her ,to Miss forcible and Miss spinks flat where she discovers the second child stuck inside that thing on the wall. As sacred as she was, she reached inside it to grab the smooth surface of the marble and awakened the sleeping creature whom shouted”Thief !Give it back! Stop! Thief !”.She was beginning to destroy the world that the other mother had created.
The world she had come to known began to lose its form and started to seem  hollow, “a formless swirling mist with no shapes or shadows behind it,while the house itself seemed to have twisted and stretched.” It seemed like it was no longer a house but a figure crouching down at her watching her every move. Her other mother was starting to get angrier at her, Coraline finally realised that the other mother did not love her but wanted to claim her as her own and tried to trap by sending her down to the cellular to face what was left of the other father a monstrous lump of clay. She escapes him and reassures herself once again that she is brave. She treads on the the old mans flat where he and his rats try to convince her to stay there , that she would get anything she desires a green gloves ,food that doesn't have all the weird things she doesn't like if she gives into the other mothers desires.Coraline refuses  his futile efforts and refocuses on getting the last dead child to free her parents and return to her own world.
Coraline fines the last marble but the rats escape with it, luckily for her the cat decapitates the rat and hand the marble back to her . Last but not list she has to find her parents so that they could finally live this dreadful world. The more she treads  on ,the house starts to disappear , it starts to become nothing.
She returns to the house with the only friend she has which is the black cat.The mother tries once more to win Coralines love but she is more determined than ever to free her parents and to get out of this terrible place. For the very first time since meeting the other mother Coraline really saw her, she resembled a huge spider ,pale and long with ever moving fingers which resembled spider legs. There she tricks the other mother into revealing where her parents were.
Step by grueling step, piece by piece ,she destroys the other house. A piece of her life ,that she thought she wanted but later on regrets  and comes to hate; by discovering the lost souls of the children her other mother had stolen the perfect world that she had created and it started to fall apart , everything seemed to shrink back into the nothing that it was.The world she had come to known began to lose its form and started to seem hollow ,”a formless swirling mist with no shapes or shadows behind it , while the house itself seemed to have twisted and stretched.”It seemed like it was no longer a house but a figure crouching down at her watching her every move. Her other mother no longer looked like her mother but a creature and inanimate object  that she no longer recognised. She finds her voice  through her fears and uncomfort and demands for the safe return of her parents and the entities.
She knew she wasn't going to escape  ,she knew the other mother would not let her go so she flung the cat directly at her and ran as fast as she could through the door and tried to slam it shut before the other mother came after her. She ran as fast as she could until she reached the other side ,she was brave , she was really brave.
Coraline was so grateful to be back in her real house , a real bedroom and to have a real parents back. She began to appreciate them even more knowing that she almost lost them .She showed them love and appreciation and ate up all her dads cooking without one ounce of a complaint.
She later  falls asleep and dreams of the three children she saved , they are finally free , they are happy once again, but they live her with a message that the other mother is angry with her and will never live her until she has her.
The other mother did not give up  she was after Coralines key so she could unlock the door once again and build her world back and claim Coraline for herself. But Coraline had a trick of her own ,she intended to trap her hand in the well in the garden which she eventually did do.
In conclusion Coraline started off as a young naive innocent child who felt abandoned and betrayed by the ones she loved. Her only solace was the need for adventure and exploring. She cared little for the needs of others and was very self absorbed with her own problems and lives. She paid little attention to authority and disregarded the warnings that persons did give her. She has discovered that she should not , underestimate her self and that she is braver than she believes herself to be and she should not let her adversities make the best out of her. She has also learnt to not to be so self centered and inconsiderate of other peoples feelings and also to realise that her parents never stopped loving her, she just lost sight of what truly mattered. She also  realises that her needs and wants did over cloud her judgement and finally realised how important her family was to her, regardless of the weird foods her father cooked and her mother being so emotionless and goal .She finds her voice  through her fears and uncomfort and demands for the safe return of her parents and the entities. She goes through a number of obstacle and trials which transform her into a better individual. She discovers that she is braver than she thought she ever was  and learnt to appreciate the little things she has in her life and not be a self absorbed brat.
Every one of us possess one or two or maybe all of these qualities we create a world where we can escape to whether it be during our showers, or a poem we write , a song we listen to . or a story we have read.We all try to create that perfect world where everything goes our way and there is no wrong in this world. We find a way to escape our reality when life seems to be to overwhelming and create our own battles, that we must overcome or have come to rise above the situation. Many of you , live lives like that of the characters, we have read in a novel or another piece of literacy work, but we may not, have been able to use fancy words such as archetypes but are all able to identify with at least one major character.

Coraline -Neil Gaiman
Coraline Jones, is a young vibrant girl who seeks out adventure when she moves into her new house.Like any young child, her need for adventure calls to her, as she explores the new world that she has been thrown into. She has no choice but to go exploring as her parent are busy doing other things and there are no other kids around that she could keep her company, so she seeks on a quest to get to know her neighbors and her immediate surroundings.
She doesn't stop just there, her curiosity has not yet  been satisfied, so she seeks out to explore her surroundings, in the hope of finding something that eventually catches her attention. She explores the  garden, an overgrown meadow and  meets a black cat who never seemed to get close enough to her.
”I want to explore”(p.4) was what she told her parents one day, when she could not get outdoors due to impending rain. Her father suggests, that she explore the flat and suggested she count all the doors ,windows and everything blue and mark them down. And with this she made her greatest discovery which would change her life completely.
She discovers a big carved, brown wooden door at the far corner of the drawing room which was locked. She questions her mother as to what is behind that door, but her mother says, that there is nothing behind there , that it leads to know where.Which she immediately questions and says “It has to go somewhere.”(p.6) She is handed a bunch of  keys so that she could see for herself that was nothing behind the door and it led to nowhere.
Her mother forgot to lock the door and that very night . She thought she heard something, a “kreee.........aaaak”(p8) down the hall and a distorted shadow standing in the drawing room of the house, it looked like a thin giant woman but the only thing that was there, when the lights were turned on, was the door which  was  left slightly ajar ,which she thinks, she witnessed her mother close shut, that very afternoon.
There is a thick layer of mist hanging in the air after the rains, which could be a sign,of an impending mystery  or an evil presence lurking around..Coraline keeps on reinforcing the idea that she is an explorer over and over again, as she goes outside to explore the wet grounds, after a day spent locked indoors. There she meets the old man upstairs, who tells her that “the mice have a message for you... The message is this.Don't go through the door.”(p14), which she finds very puzzling and strange and does not know what it means.
Coraline tries  desperately to get the attention of her parents as she returns home’  who pay her efforts little notice and shrug her off, and tells her to go look for the neighbors to keep her company, as they are very busy with other things. This intern, drives Coraline even more to find something to keep her interest and may have been the reason for her going into the other side of the door. She meets Miss Spink who reads the leaf in her tea and warns her that she in terrible danger and to not wear green. They also give her a stone with a hole in it which is meant to protect her.
At this point i do not think that Coralines future peril is a definite dream, as everyone around her is giving her warnings to stay away from the the door and that she is in danger. But she takes no heed to their warning and proceeds and does what she wants too.
Coraline insists on buying ‘GREEN GLOVES” the same colour they warned her not to wear instead of tired old “Grey ones” which made her blend in with everyone else, something that she was trying to avoid. But the colors themselves are symbolic as green represents life and a new start and grey represents gloom, death, something old and grey.
Boredom is something that coraline experiences a lot throughout the novel and this is the one thing that drives her to be adventurous and to search for new things. She stays behind on her mothers trip to the grocery store , where she is tempted yet again to go look for the keys to the big door.
She unlocks the door and discovers a hallway instead of the brick walls that was once blocking the entrance .She knew she was doing something wrong but something urged her along to step through the door and tread down the long dark corridor to other flat, oh so she thought.  The corridor was a mirage of her home as it seemed familiar to her, but not quite ,as something was very different. There she discovers her other mother, whose skin was white as paper, who was taller and thinner, who had black gleaming button eyes(are the door to your soul) and whose fingers who were long and ever moving and whose dark red fingernails were curved and sharp(were spider like). She also met her other father who cooked real food unlike that of her dad and a room which seemed more interesting and lively than her own.
In this other world everything seems to be perfect but yet different as everything looked the same but wasn't exactly the same she had another mother and a father who were nothing like her parents. They had black buttons like that of a doll, which seemed unlifelike and motionless and her mother had hands of that of a spider, which was forever moving and always ready to pounce and a father, who just smiled and went along with everything. Her parents were not the same ones who raised her in the other house, everything seemed to have changed but the black cat who wasn't another anything but himself, which was just the cat.
The cat represented the one real thing that Coraline had left , the only thing that didn't change, when she crossed over to the other side.He made her fairytale become a reality and not just a need to explore a different world but one of survival and cunningness against the grasps of the other mother who wanted Coraline to become part of them , to be able to sew the large black buttons onto her eyes..He become her  shining light ,the one who shed truth on the entire situation.
Coraline soons returns to her house where she discovers that her mother and father have not yet returned , they have been missing for a day or so. She feels lonely and has a sense of abandonment that her parents have left her to fend for herself. But little did she know, that by, crossing over to the other world, her parents had been stolen away, on the other side of the mirror down the hallway, by her other mother who intends on using them as a leverage for Coraline to  become a part of their happy family. With the help of the cat she discovers her parents trapped behind  a mirror, pleading for her to help them. She then realises how much she truly cares for her parents and how much they have done for her. And by losing them, she truly feels the love for them that she had buried deep within.
Coralines life changes from then on, as her journey is now a personal one which is to save her parents and return them to her world. She once again has to enter cross that passageway and to be brave for her parents even though she was scared to death of what would happen when she reached the other mother. She keeps on saying to herself “when you scared but you still do it anyway, thats brave”(p57).”I will be brave” “No i am brave”
Coraline finally realises that she does not want to live and interesting life ,where she gets everything her way and everything seems to be perfect ,she wants her parents back and confronts the other mother about .She finally finds her voice through her fears and uncomfort and demands for the safe return of her parents. But old mother tries to convince that her old parents have left her , that she will”never become bored” and “will never abandon”her.(p60).She reassures her that she will always be safe with her. The other mother tries to convince her that her parents have abandoned her showing her an image of them going on a vacation and having loads of fun without her which stung her and made tears welt up in her eyes but she did not believe that her parents would have done such a thing , that the image before her was not real , this did not exist, it was the mother trying to trick her to believe that her parents didn't need her anymore.
For the first time Coraline felt a strange sense of discomfort in the other house and the cat revisited her once again. The cat informs her that the other mother wants her because it wants somebody to love and “her kind of thing loves games and challenges.”(p63)
Coraline returns to her house once again and has to face her other mother , she has to return home once again to be with her real parents and that she has no plans to love her. For the first time she sees her other mother as who she really is, a creature and inanimate object ; as she gobbles down live beetles before her eyes. She does not accept the other mother as her mother and she throws her into a mirror and locks her inside.until she decides to  come back to her senses. There she discovers three trapped souls left in the dark, whose souls hearts and lives had been taken away by the other mother and whom had been forgotten.
They warn her to flee this place while she still has life left in her, to never look back if she gets the chance to escape but she refuses to live until she saves her parents. She also embarks on another quest to free the souls of her new found friends.
She tells the other mother her fears when she lets her out, about the other children she has met in the mirror and how there was nothing left but an empty shell of what they use to be and is this is what she wants of her as well. But the other mother denies knowing of any  other kids having ever existed and just says to her to not be silly that i'll always love you.
Coraline then proposes a game to the other mother as she does likes a good challenge.Coraline makes a proposal that if she finds each soul and her parents that the other mother must let her go as well as everyone else and if she loses then she will stay there forever and allow her to sew the black buttons into her eyes  and love her and let her love her as well. She proposes an exploring game to find the dead children and her real mother and is skeptical whether or not the other mother would keep her side of the deal, she swears thst she would give her right hand.
And thus she begins her journey to help those who needed it most with little protection but the stone with the hole in it which allowed her to find the glow of the spirits who have been entrapped in various locations. She discovers the first child in the toy box in her room which angers the other mother who lashes out strong winds at her to deter her from continuing with her quest. She continues on to Miss forcible and Miss spinks flat where she discovers the second child stuck inside that thing on the wall.As sacred as she was she reached inside it ti grap the smooth surface of the marble and awakened the sleeping creature whom shouted”Theif !Give it back! Stop! Theif !”.She was beginning to destroy the world that the other mother had created.
The world she had come to known began to lose its form and started to seem  hallow, “a formless swirling mist with no shapes or shadows behind it,while the house itself seemed to have twisted and stretched.” It seemed like it was no longer a house but a figure crouching down at her watching her every move. Her other mother was starting to get angrier at her Coraline finally realised that the other mother did not love her but wanted to claim her as her own and tried to trap by sending her down to the cellular to face what was left of the other father a monstrous lump of clay. She escapes him and reassures herself once again that she is brave. She treads on the the old mans flat where he and his rats try to convince her to stay there , that she would get anything she desires a green gloves ,food that doesn't have all the weird things she doesn't like if she gives into the other mothers desires.Coraline refuses  his futile efforts and refocuses on getting the last dead child to free her parents and return to her own world.

blog entry number 9

Tristan grew into a brave ,courageous young man who learned to not give up and stand up for what he wants. He grows into the warrior archetype throughout the movie where he  starts off as an outcast who did not fit in and who could not get a girl by the name of Victoria to look his way. He later changes into a seeker who sets out on adventure to win the heart of his true love, along the way the warrior archetype is discovered through his actions and words. He gains a new sense of freedom, a spiritual strength , the courage to look ahead , to defend himself against others,  to persevere, to be brave and fearless and dynamic.
The warrior archetype is shown as he defends the fallen star from dangerous perils ahead of them.He saves her from getting a heart sliced open at the inn and then saved her at the very end from three witches even though the odds were against him.
Tristan also finally defends him self against Dunstan the other suitor who wants to win Victoria's heart.

DO NOT GO GENTLE INTO THE GOOD NIGHT- BY DYLAN THOMAS

From reading this poem i get a feeling of sadness and longing for change, a yearning for a battle between the light of day and the darkness that lies at night. It urges for one to fight, rage, and rave "at the close of day" which to me represents fire, a strong steady  light to flicker in the darkness of the night , to remain alive and wake up with the light of day.
In the second stanza the writer talks about men who are torn between two lives "forked no lighting" men ho have lived life ,who have made the best of it but are not quite yet ready to let go as they have felt that they have left a significant difference enough in this world, he asks them to fight, fight and do not go gentle into the night .
He also makes mention of "good men"who are on their last journey on the boat of life , who is crying and cheering and reminiscing of all what they have done in life and may not have done to fight and rage against the waves and do not go crashing into the shore but rage and rage towards the sun , the source of life not into the ever lasting darkness, the dying light.
Even men who are dying and those who can not see the light of day knows that death is near ,their eyes still burn like the fire within "blind eyes could blaze like meteors and be gay"  ,to fight for life to fight for chance to exist , fight to be alive and to be able to live again once more for yet another day.
At the end of the poem the poet gets personal and introduces us to his father who we find out is on his death bed , who is slowly sleeping away into the abyss. He is asking his father to to be how he he use to be when he was filled with life ,he begs his father to fight it ,"do not go into that gentle good night  but remain on earth with me and remain as you  were , filled with life wise and fierce.

Blog entry number 7

An archetype that i do not like is that of an orphan. No one should feel like an outsider in his or her world and that they do not belong. we all have a hard time connecting with people but we all possess our own unique qualities which attract people who think like us, who act like us, who even look like us to themselves, we have a persona which draws people to us .The orphan archetype tries to had to fit in with the crowd and they loose their sense of identity trying to to be something that they are not trying to fit in where they do not belong.
Although the orphan has certain strenghts, like the independance and their ability to see the world through a different light.
I also realized that the orphan and the lover shared similar personality traits  which is weakness and a longing to belong , i really so not like that archetype in an individual that is the need to be clingy, the need to belong to a certain group. Every individual should be their own person and fine their own way and be different from everyone else.

THE CAREGIVER

I chose the caregiver because it was one of the highest i scored in as well as the jester. The caregiver are basically kind people, they are generous persons who enjoy helping others , they are filled with compassion and help others before they help themselves, they are also very nurturing and are not considered selfish or self centered, they are also very giving individuals and make huge sacrifices for the good of others.Being a caregiver also has its disadvantages , where people may take advantage of them, also having a caregiver archetype the person may invest too much into that individual and loose touch of themselves getting to wrapped up in their lives.
Examples of caregivers are philanthropists( persons who give money to organisations or countries who are in dire need of it.), Oprah( she  built a school in Africa to help young women empower them selves and to get a better education),Buddhist-their main purpose is for enlightenment  of ones life,firefighters-they put their lives on the lines for the benefit of others.

REFLECTIONS BLOG NUMBER 5

Blog entry 5

During this semester i learned about different archetypes like the warrior, the orphan, the caregiver and

many more. i did not know peoples characteristics could be fitted into such genres , nor did i pay

attention to the characteristics of characters i watched on tv.I knew it had a purpose and a story

behind it but like many i kept my eyes shut and looked right past it .Only now that i have become

more aware of the different archetypes and can now, categorize myself into a few of them: the ones

that i think my personality shines through in the most. i also learned about the romans and how life is

very symbolic and we use symbols every day without realising the message we are portraying. i also

learned about the roman times, and greek mythology  which was never really taught to me except

when when my past teacher made us each pick a god and talk about them during homeroom, which

was many many years ago and i can't recall what i did learn out of that.

i also learned that there is really no wrong answer or know wrong train of thought when it comes to

your ideas and i have been chastised for  not thinking like others and interpreting information at the

same level.i feel less restricted and less pressure to say what's on my mind and express my ideas

more smoothly and easily without  being judged, once i prove that what i am saying is right.

Coming into this course i didn't know what to expect as  i had no idea that i was signing into hybrid

course.I've always loved the English language but hated poetry with a passion mostly

Shakespearean poetry but have learned to analyze it over the years.I'm hoping to broader my

knowledge of the English language as this i hope will be my concentration as i continue my

studies. My only hopes now is passing this class and being able to juggle all the witting assignments

given to me .

DAVID COOK
PERMANENT

Is this the moment where I look you in the eye?
Forgive my broken promise that you'll never see me cry
And everything, it will surely change even if I tell you I won't go away today
Will you think that you're all alone
When no one's there to hold your hand?
And all you know seems so far away and everything is temporary
Rest your head
I'm permanent

I know he's living in hell every single day
And so I ask, oh God is there some way for me to take his place
And when they say it's all touch and go
I wish I could make it go away
But still you say
Will you think that you're all alone
When no one's there to hold your hand?
When all you know seems so far away
And everything is temporary,
Rest your head
I'm permanent

I'm permanent

Is the moment where I look you in the eye?
Forgive my broken promise that you'll never see me cry.

David Roland Cook was born in Texas (1982) and raised in Missouri. He started playing music at the age of 12 when he self taught himself how to play the guitar and formed a band at the age of 15. He is a songwriter and singer in the genre of Alternative rock and Pop music. Cook took part in the eighth season of American Idol and won it ; and from there is career jumped started. During one of his tours he lost his brother against the battle of cancer and one of his albums were dedicated to him and this song i am about to write about.
“PERMANENT” may describe and everlasting event which can not be changed or undone ,it is a foreboding of what is to come in the rest of the poem. The speaker can not face that individual anymore(line 1).There is a type of reassurance and broken promises , feeling that someone can not fulfill all what they said they would do ,and even if there are not there , they are still present so have faith(2-8). i know he is suffering everyday that he is alive ,God I'm asking you ,to let it be me instead, let me be the one who feels the pain(9-10).It may not be so everyday ,you may not feel this pain your entire life, he wishes that he could wipe away all your fears, hurt and pain and know that you not here alone, that i am here with you to hold your hand, be patient for I am always with you(10-19).Permanent is being repeated again ,an everlasting present or memory that will never live.(20).Is this the time I look through you, forgive me for breaking my promise I never wanted to see you cry.(21)
The song Permanent by David cook is about losing something that is important to you and trying to find reassurance that life will go on and that we will meet again.  According to  dictionary.com, Permanent  means “everlasting, existing perpetually” , in this case in the context of this song it means although death has separated us and we can no longer be together , just know that i am forever with you , when u need me , we are separated physically but that doesn't mean that we cannot be together ,as my memories are with you and this death is only temporary.. The song permanent is about loss and trying to accept it, it is a conversation between the one who has died and the surviving brother , a back to back conversation.
In the first half of the song the individual who is dying crying out , he is asking “.
Is this the moment where I look you in the eye?
Forgive my broken promise that you'll never see me cry And everything, it will surely change even if I tell you I won't go away today” He knows that his end is near and he won't be there to fulfill all the promises he has made , his promises to always be there through thick and thin, to be the biggest supporter the writer has , to be the one who holds his and  doesn't show no fear. he wants the writer to forgive him for crying not being able to stand next to him , to  not be able to look him in the eyes any more. Guilt has taken over his being as he doesn't want to face the writer because he is dying. He  knows that  he won't depart this earth at this very moment but when it does happen  that you should know that life is going to change, and that you won't be the same anymore. I believe that the first speaker is accepting his fate; which is death,  although he won't be able to be there in the flesh, spiritually he will always be there. The pain and hurt that the writer is experiencing is just temporary, and so is his  death( it is a physical departure),and we will be together yet again when you come to meet me. The first speaker is reassuring the writer by trying to put his mind at ease and by trying hard to tell him do not think of this as the end, but something that is temporary “And everything is temporary,
Rest your head I'm permanent. Hence why these two sentences are constantly being repeated throughout the song , it is a sign of validation.
In the second stanza the speaker switches back  to the writer, he questions what  God has done,he is asking God, why does death have to exist ?, why couldn't he make him better? , why have him die? , why make him feel like this? and why didn't he  take him instead?  He wants go to have let him be the one who had to suffer, let him be the one who is going through this pain , to allow him to move into  the darkness “
I know he's living in hell every single day
And so I ask, oh God is there some way for me to take his place.” People say that this feeling comes

and goes , that after death there comes life , a light but it isn't so , he wishes that this wasn't true ,

that he could erase everything that has happened , erase your suffering , the pain. You not being able

to hold my hand.

It then switches back to the first  speaker ,  who  is reassuring the writer once again  that everything

is going to be okay, that life will go on and that his memories  will  not disappear if he doesn't exist on

earth any more, his presence is everlasting  and this phase in his life is just temporary ,” I  AM

PERMANENT”.(last line)

MY IMMORTAL- EVENESCENCE

Evenescence was founded in Little Rock Arkansas in 1998. They were originally founded as an American christian group and later turned into a rock group. The band was formed in 19915 by Amy Lee lead singer, pianist and song writer and  former lead guitarist Ben Moody. Their first hit songs written together were "Solitude" , "Give Unto Me", "My Immortal" and "Understanding." The bands name is derived from the word evanesce which means to disappear.
I chose this band and one of my all time favorite songs called "My Immortal" because the words speak to me, it reminds me of a time when there is pain and inner battle to forget what was lost , hurt or said. Its a timeless song that i can have on replay over and over again. Its haunting and yet very beautiful all at once.
This song is filled with symbolic references and vivid images. From the very start the title of the song, "My Immortals" gives us and idea of everlasting life , something that can never be forgotten  and even the first two  lines of the song "I'm so tired of being here suppressed by all my childish fears" ;shows us' how she is afraid just like a child of overcoming her fears , of not being able to get past whats holding her back.
In lines five and six, she mentions that your presence still lingers here and it wont live me alone meaning that she can not escape the presence that is haunting her. In stanza two when she says these wounds wont seem to heal, this pain is just to real she is referring, to a pain that is everlasting and that wont ever seem to go away  and also when she says there's to much that time can not erase she is saying that time is standing still and even through it nothing has changed. The main chorus has the most symbolic meaning as it talking about the person or entity that she loved  and all the memories and the struggles he endured .
In stanza four the first line "You used to captivate me by your resonating light this phrase talks about the light the thing or person brought into her life , the happiness she experienced being with that thing or individual. Also in stanza 5 the line your face it once haunts my pleasant dreams could be related to someone passing away and not being able to move on or even a love gone wrong and not being able to overcome the lost of that love.In line 6 as well your voice it once chased all the sanity in me could be interpreted as not being able to function when this person speaks to them , or when they hear that persons voice it makes them weak , unable to think.
Although this song could be interpreted as a death of a loved one and not being able to move on  but on the other hand i strongly believe, that this song is talking about a love that cut so deep that time can not get rid of the hold the person has over their heart over their entire being and psyche. This song focuses so much on pain and love and  not being able to let go  of what was no matter how hard you try to. Its about loosing what you thought was all yours and having it torment your everyday move ,living u merciless to its raft.

blog entry number 2

EVANECENCE is an American rock band founded in Little Rock, Arkansas in 1995 by singer/pianist Amy Lee and guitarist Ben Moody.
Evanescence was founded by singer, pianist and songwriter Amy Lee and former lead guitarist and songwriter Ben Moody. The two met in 1994 at a youth camp in Little Rock, where Moody heard Lee playing "I'd Do Anything for Love (But I Won't Do That)" by Meat Loaf on the piano.

"My Immortal" BY EVANECENCE

I'm so tired of being here
Suppressed by all my childish fears
And if you have to leave
I wish that you would just leave
'Cause your presence still lingers here
And it won't leave me alone

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

[Chorus:]
When you cried I'd wipe away all of your tears
When you'd scream I'd fight away all of your fears
And I held your hand through all of these years
But you still have
All of me

You used to captivate me by your resonating light
Now I'm bound by the life you left behind
Your face – it haunts my once pleasant dreams
Your voice – it chased away all the sanity in me

These wounds won't seem to heal
This pain is just too real
There's just too much that time cannot erase

[Chorus]

I've tried so hard to tell myself that you're gone
But though you're still with me
I've been alone all along

[Chorus]

...me, me, me.

I chose this song out of hundreds of songs because it was the first song that i could relate to. it talks about death and haunting and mystery and out wanting to run away to erase the memories ,everything that was you and could be reminded of you.  it brings out your fears of having loving and lost and all the pain that brings out inside of you.Even the bands name is symbolic as it means fade away or disappear. Like this song many of her songs are haunting and wonderful all at once. they speak to your bare emotions bring about anger hate sadness  takes you to different places.

Original sin :A short story

Upon first  reading  this poem i believe that it was a spirit haunting the  family and the individual and a nightmare that he could not escape. It was a bad memory that he tried to forget that he tried to escape from but always seemed to creep back to him to find him where ever he was. It was with him where he first lived, a spirit with his grandfather and he living his first home made the spirit follow him or perhaps his grandfather sent it to him to remind him of home, a beautiful  nightmare perhaps or just a a family curse following the last young soul.

He felt comforted knowing that it was with him in this indifferent place where he felt lonely , a welcome invitation to what he once knew and wanted to loose...there was no escaping from what was there except death..

Upon the second reading of this poem a whole bunch of possibilities came into light .. i still felt that the poem dealt with death in an essence and it represented a side of him that know one knew in the day of time..all his secrets and fears were let out at  night when he laid his head to rest. his resentments towards life and joy and his happiness towards death and knowing that others are no longer there. his obsession with cold dark ugly things symbolises his fears and pain and wanting to let this evil out. but he could not for during the day it no longer existed.

Others talked about a woman loosing a child and man going through trying times as he grows up and its haunting , painful memories perhaps.

All this can be true  and this indeed opens my eyes to a whole lot of possibilities.

The feelings that is evoked for me from this poem is death ,loneliness and escape.
