Human beings have been fascinated about mystical creatures from as long as I remember being able to read
a book. I was introduced to African Folklore stories by the names of , "Anansi the spider" and "Br'er Rabbit and The Tar Baby" whom first picked my fascination about the supernatural world.
From then on i learnt about more about folk tale stories from the Caribbean namely: lajabless( a child who
was born dead and who did not get baptized) who came to take the places of living babies, majinwe( a
human being who sold his soul to the devil and had to shed its skin at night), garje or obeah( black magic )
and the list goes on. This was enough to scare you to death. And the stories that were told by different individuals was enough to make you want to splash holy water all over your skin.
All these things made you wonder, if there was really a supernatural world?, Were these creatures real or just legends made up to scare us and make us fear the unknown? or Was it merely stories from an individual with a vivid imagination?
Its like the novel we read " Coraline" , where she was faced with supernatural creatures who transformed them selves to lure her into their world. We may not know if her adventure was made up or if she really did endure all the hardships that she did . But we do know that a child of her age could not imagine such creatures in such detail or frighten her self in such a way for the zeal of an adventure.
We can say the author himself is fascinated with life beyond ours like everyone else.We always wonder if there is world that exists within ours or in the space of time. We try to ponder ideas and theories and develop philosophies to try to understand what he have deemed the supernatural.
Its also like the film we watched in class "Spirited away" where Chihiro was just flung into the spirit world where she had to try to survive and rescue her parents. Little did she know by just walking, through that tunnel that she had crossed the threshold into another world and would meet magical creatures that she never would imagine.
Its like we human beings are just fascinated by what we do not understand and films and movies such as this draw us in , it holds our attention and makes want to know more.We all wonder what lurks in the dark when we sleep at night? That creepy feeling we get and our hairs stand on end for no apparent reason what causes this?Is there an entire world behind our closets like the movie Monster Inc? or Are there really monsters under our bed? and Blood sucking Vampires? We look for something that will hold our interest because maybe our lives are just to boring and we crave for an adventure.Or is there another reason that we humans are so fascinated about supernatural beings or are we the ones who should fear ourselves.
